I grew up in a small town of 3,600 people, living just up the street from the town centre. It wasn’t much, a square of concrete that held a little lawn, a bunch of benches and a big fountain that tempted us to jump in on hot days. Because we lived in the lee of Lake Huron, this wasn’t much of a temptation during the winter. …
There is a difference between asking challenging questions and giving into conspiracy theories. Black Panther’s Letitia Wright is finding this out the hard way after sharing a conspiracy theory video…
“Good evening, citizens of the world. I speak to you tonight not as the President of the United States, but as the spokesperson for these world leaders.”
The President paused while the cameras swept over the faces of the world leaders behind and beside her. The UN General Secretary sat at her right, while the leader of the European Union sat at her left. Beside them were the leaders of every major country around the world — along with many minor ones.
As the camera focused back on the President, she tucked a strand of her deep brown hair behind her ear before taking a breath. …
This is not the story you think it will be. The ending is not foretold, the journey has barely begun, and there will be many challenges along the way.
Let’s start with the unambiguous truth.
I am fat.
Morbidly Obese to be exact.
On my 6-foot tall frame, the 360lbs of weight I carry around with me aren’t as visible as you would expect. But they’re there.
I weighed myself on Monday — 366lbs of me stood on the scale and cringed. I was even heavier than I had expected.
But the story goes back before just this past Monday. There’s a narrative throughout my life about an unhealthy relationship with food and the unique shame of being the fat kid. …
At the beginning of October, I wrote about the different platforms I’ve used for writing and what their benefits and drawbacks are. At the time, I was writing on three platforms: Medium, Vocal, and Grinfer. The last two are relatively new, so no worries if you don’t know them.
I’ve decided to focus my time on Medium — and here’s why you should too!
Just so we’re on the same page, I’ve shared my feedback with these sites as well in the hopes they will improve their user experience.
Medium is fantastic for new writers, especially talented ones who can get into publications. The various methods of exposure are an excellent way for new writers to build a following. Whether you self-publish, publish your own publication, or focus on getting into publications there are lots of opportunities to build a following. …
It would be very easy to think that our 4-year nightmare is over, and while it is a relief that we will no longer have an openly racist, sexist fascist in the White House the real work is just beginning.
Many people around the world are thankful that they aren’t American. Here in Canada, people are often heard to say “well at least we’re not as bad as they are south of the border.” They’re referring to the open, vitriolic, and sometimes violent divisions between political sides. …
Almost a year after I published it, I am still earning the majority of my Medium earnings from one story. It’s not a fortune by any means, but a $700 story is nothing to scoff at, and I am happy for the limited success it brought me!
This hit all the right notes:
If you found me because of this article, then I’m excited to have you here! You were one of almost 15,000 people who at least looked at the article, and spent a few minutes of the 253 hours of reading time on something I wrote. …
With this week’s news of a possible COVID-19 vaccine before 2020 has ended (all thirty years of it), it is starting to look like we might be turning the corner on the longest year in collective history. Billions of people around the world have adjusted their regular routines to meet the challenges of this pandemic, and lots of appreciation is flowing for those who’ve been on the front lines.
In the midst of all this, there is one group of people who aren’t getting the thanks that they deserve. …
The importance of blank head space to writers and other creatives
After months of sitting with an idea, I finally had it burst into life as a full-fledged outline for not one, but three novels. The original idea had been slowly born out of reading and dreaming about what could be. I’d played around with a character and an overall arc, but hadn’t been able to break through some of the barriers.
Last week that changed. I now have an outline for a series of three novels based around the same idea and following the same cast through the entire series. …
